The problem

When Canada’s Lobbying Commissioner reported that, under COVID-19, lobbying in March reached the highest level in recent history, we did some digging.[1] What we found in the Federal Lobby Registry shocked us.

The day after the World Health Organization declared the outbreak of COVID-19 a pandemic, big polluters began a full-court lobbying press. While we’ve been at home, oil, petrochemical and plastics companies, and their associations, reported more than 400 communications with federal officials since the start of the pandemic — that’s an average about 5 meetings per day … and climbing. And that’s not all. Sectors with other massive environmental footprints (aviation, auto makers, forestry and banking) have had hundreds more meetings.[2]

We know that the oil, gas and plastics industries are fighting environmental protection regulations and asking for a massive bailout to the tune of as much as $30 billion. [3] The forestry industry is looking for a cash influx, echoing calls for $75 billion more in financing for Canadian businesses [4] The aviation sector is seeking to suspend the carbon tax, while car companies only want to pay it if their money gets recycled back to them some way.[5,6] Meanwhile, Canada’s banks cater to the wealthy and refuse to move billions of dollars out of fossil fuels. [7]

Industry’s unlimited access and influence on high-ranking politicians could derail the action we need to build back better from COVID-19 with a green and just recovery.

The solution

It’s time for Canada’s top political officials to stop choosing Big Business over the people who elected them. Cabinet needs to hear more than one side of the story. This is why we’re calling on Trudeau’s cabinet to organize a public consultation with Canadians on how to address the climate and nature crisis while addressing the social inequalities unveiled by the pandemic.
